Brooklyn | Joaanna, Red Hook

For portrait and model sessions, I normally shoot Leica first, then I will bring out the Hasselbad to switch things up.

I am super fast with the Leica and with the aspect ratio, it lends itself more to environmental portraits, including more of the background, more of the setting and environment. The Leica is like an extension of me.

I am slower with the Hassie, more measured, more intentional. Separate light meter, the lateral opposite viewfinder, the waist level POV. Different but not worse or better, just different. Being slower creates different images as well. Not capturing the microsecond moment with the Leica, but capturing a stretch of time.

This was in Red Hook, Brooklyn with the beautiful Johanna. I had met her a few years ago in Lisbon when I booked her for a shoot there.

Shooting through things such as these plants is a great, easy and effective technique, providing great depth and some dynamic compositions. Also it shows off a lens’ bokeh.
